this has to be shown ..  whew
has anyone seen this ? if this is legit it has to be the coolest production error ive ever seen to be honest . I love death star droids as they are within my favorite 5 figures list of all time but this just cant be real can it?
what does everyone think ? is it legit? if this were another time in our hobby I might to be inclined to think its legit but as endless scams and repros plague our hobby I am a bit skeptical to put it mildy . if this were proven to be a real error and 100% real im sure it would be worth quite a bit , I know id pay a ton for him as us death star droid fans really don't have many variants to collect .. anyways check him out  Shocked  stick

Without seeing it in person, it's hard to say if it's real. I remember seeing a C-3PO dipped in the silver & the black DSD paint applied, but I don't remember where? So it could technically be possible.

It's crazy cool! But my instincts tell me someone has been meddling with it and it's not legit. Hope I'm wrong!

Yes Clint you are right, there was a C3PO (it was even a MOC on a DSD Card) sprayed silver with black eyes and shoulders aplied. Looked terrific cool. I hope I saved the pics and will share if I find them.

I saw this golden DSD as well. IMO the colour turns too much into a yellow shade to be true golden C3PO like. I remember having an C3PO as kid being very silvery. I painted him with a yellow marker which looked pretty much the same as this one (I have to take a pic of this too). I could imagine there was a boy who wanted to have a C3PO instead of a DSD and therefore painted it like I did as a kid.

He was again on ebay last year. That was when I saw this one the first time. It ended about $7000,-

Just found the pics again :

Very neat figure Bill but its hard to say from the photo what it really is scratch

I posted pics of the carded C-3PO with the DSD paint job n the Factory errors thread a few months ago and I remember that the person selling it on Ebay was Tom Derby . Considering he is who AFA sends VC Jawa's , DT Lukes etc to , there's a pretty decent chance that the carded C-3PO was legit .

As others have said here it is also possible that its a childhood custom ( or a recent assholes fake variant attempt Wink )

The other possibility is discoloration . I have came across several Gold DSD figures over the years and have been fascinated with them for a long time .

I have saved some photos I took several years ago but the quality is rather poor - unfortunately they were taken before I got a decent camera and learned more about taking pics .

[800][You must be registered and logged in to see this image.][/800]

Now I am well aware that they did not leave the factory gold and that it is most likely the result of degradation / discoloration.

I feel there is more to it then that because I have seen 4 or 5 of them over the years and they all have shared some similar traits .

They are always very glossy/shiny and have a much smoother finish then the standard ones I see . They have far less surface scratches and the black paint is always much nicer .

There are a couple ideas I have been rolling over for quite some time .

Perhaps the earliest DS Droids did not have a clear coat put on them at the factory but after a few years Kenner may have realized that they were very prone to paint wear (like we are all aware of today) and decided to add the clear coat for protection and durability ?

or

Perhaps there was a factory that used a different type of clear coat - something more like lacquer , which I know from my construction experience , is very prone to yellowing with age .

I am not trying to argue that they are a true variation but I do feel there is a bigger story here then most guys have tried to think about . If a blond hair and brown hair Luke are variants , then it's possible that DS Droids with or without clear coat could be a variation too confused

Just some food for thought Very Happy

The second from right is a C3PO I painted as a kid because he wasn't golden enough for me. So to speak my very first custom Wink
I used a yellow feltpen for this. As you can see the result is clearly yellowish with a slight touch of green not the golden colour original apllied to C3PO. IMO the shown DSD has the same yellow greenish colour and therefore can't be an legit factory error, just this colour was never used by the factory.
In my opinion a Boy didn't want to have an DSD and just wished to Play with C3PO and therefore did the paintjob as I did to C3PO as kid

This is mine golden DSD. Unfortunately a bad pic too. Pic doesn't do him justice about his golden glance. Need daylight Wink [insert_new_line]
But this is an interesting Point you mentionend James. Never thought about this. Probably just because I own only one of These guys.

James, did I send you a silver C-3PO with a package of stripped droids?

The one hiding in the back of this picture.  If so, do you think it could have been silver dipped or a custom job?

[700][You must be registered and logged in to see this image.][/700]

I think that I have a couple of the goldish DSD's some where as well.

I can't remember Clint Embarassed

If you did I probably finished stripping him lol!

Does your gold DSD have the same traits I mentioned above ? Glossier finish and / or less paint wear and surface wear when compared to a nice silver figure ?

He does have very small paintwear and is over all in a very good condition. If he is glossier...... hard to tell. Maybe not really sure. Embarassed

Is there actual silver in the paint to give it color? Perhaps if the concentration is a bit higher, it's tarnishing to a slight gold color like silver dinnerware would do due to oxidization. Sounds crazy, but I wonder if one of those anti-tarnish pastes you use on real silver would restore it to the proper silver finish.

I grabbed the rest of the photos from the gold DSD auction , photo shopped them and added them to the 1st post that Bill started this thread with What a Face

After seeing the rest of the pictures I would say the figure is definitely fishy Suspect

I see quite a bit of silver showing underneath which , IMO , definitely makes it look like the gold was added later . It is still possible that a kid attempted to put a clear coat (probably laquer)  on it that yellowed after years but , either way , it looks to be a home made / custom enhancement to me No

It definitely looks like a custom, once I saw the rest of the pictures.  Someone got ripped off for $455 USD ($591 CND).  What did the description say in the listing?

Edit.  I found the listing.  This seller, sells a lot of SW.  So he would have known it was a custom, by looking at it. fun

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

He has carefully worded the listing, and actually says that it's a painted DSD. I think the factory error that he talks about is the black paint coming off. tongue
