The Tantive Traveler
The Adventures of a Roaming Rebel

[main_image][You must be registered and logged in to see this image.][/main_image]

A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away.... It is a period of civil war. Rebel spaceships, striking from a hidden base, have won their first victory against the evil Galactic Empire. During the battle, rebel spies managed to steal secret plans to the Empire's ultimate weapon, the DEATH STAR, an armoured space station with enough power to destroy an entire planet.
Pursued by the Empire's sinister agents, the Tantive XI  has acted as a decoy to allow Princess Leia and her ship, custodian of the stolen plans to escape. During the chase Tantive XI has suffered heavy damage and her crew have abandoned ship. Among them a lone Rebel Soldier has crash landed on a strange planet and now he must find his way home.....

Dear Diary

I managed to put the ship down on this desolate looking planet, 3rd from a yellow dwarf sun. As some of the ships computer systems are still operational, I was able to figure out that I'm on a Humanoid planet called Earth, located somewhere in the Outer Rim Territories. The engines are beyond repair, so I must explore this planet, to see if these Humanoids are capable of space travel and getting me back to the Rebel Alliance base. As I emerged from the ships hull, I noticed that I was not alone. There starring back at me was one of the local inhabitants. too be continued

Saturday, Feb 28/15

Dear Diary,

Today we ended up in a place called Wasaga Beach.  It's the worlds longest fresh water beach with 14 km (8.7 miles) of beach front.  It's located about 1 1/2 drive north of Toronto on the shores of Georgian Bay (part of Lake Huron).  Fortunately we just made it in time for the sunset.  In the background, the sun is setting over Blue Mountain & the city of Collingwood that is across the bay.  Blue Mountain one of the local ski resorts and part of the Niagara Escarpment.  It's part of the same ridge formation as Niagara Falls and runs through Ontario.  You can see the lights on the ski runs of the resort, and the old grain elevators of the at the port in Collingwood.  As you can see, it is the stupidest time of year to visit the beaches in this cursed country.  The lakes are frozen over and there is nothing but snow and ice. What a Face

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

After walking around for a short while, we went back to the old guy's family cottage (wife's family actually), just a half block (2 min walk) from the beach.  We hung out and drank some beers, and watched some familiar movie on a machine called a VHS tape player.  I also admired the horn collection that the old guy's father-in law had hanging on the walls.  Apparently, "his" grandfather (from Germany) was stationed in West Africa for some time (not sure which war, possible before WW1), and would send these home to his family in Germany.  They have been in his family for a few generation now.  There was also an old map of Ontario hanging on the wall as well, that I thought was neat. chug

Sunday, Mar 01/15

Dear Diary,

This morning we headed back down to the beach before we had to go home.  The view wasn't much better in the day light.  We even walked out a couple hundred meters on to the ice.  In the summer time we would have been swimming in the lake. Rolling Eyes

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

The old guy showed me some pictures of what the place looks like in the spring and summer when the snow is gone.  I'll have to come back and visit sometime in the summer. Very Happy

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Thank goodness this vacation in this frozen wasteland is over.  Now, I'm off to where?  Not the General's place again!  How unlucky can I be. Shocked

Later that evening, the old guy's wife came down and took some pictures as I was preparing for my next flight.  The old guy said that these pictures where in honor of the General and the Beard convention & Sci-Fi convention that I'm going to next.  The old guy didn't shave for the entire month that I was here, and his wife is getting a little tired of it.  She says that he's trying out for the role of Santa Claus next year. lol!

Roaming Rebel Trooper, Thanks for visiting Cambridge and Ontario. cheers

THE TANTIVE TRAVELER - The Adventures Of A Roaming Rebel Empty Re: THE TANTIVE TRAVELER - The Adventures Of A Roaming Rebel

Post by General Kahn Mon May 11, 2015 9:38 pm

Dear Diary

After leaving the cold of Canada, I was hoping to find a warmer climate.... I guess this was not to be Sad Commander Clint has sent me to a place called England were I am hoping I can find some form of Transport off this rock. England is a bleak place and not a great deal warmer than Canada but I am assured that there is an event here where I may be able to find so folk I may be able to get along with.
My host here in Northern England is an odd character, his name is General Kahn, but he doesn't really strike me as a 'real' General, he certainly doesn't have dress like one, if anything he looks like he's mugged a Scarecrow! He certainly needs a shave! But not as much as some of his friends!!!
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

The next day, the General took me too a convention in the town of Scarborough where I got to meet several members of his team which was a pleasurable experience Smile The General was quite excited about me meeting a couple of people, I'm not entirely sure why?? Marco and the General wanted to have a 'selfie' with me and DARTH VADER!!!! I wasn't happy, but it turned out it was actually just some old guy called Dave???
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Next, I got to meet a man called Paul, the General insisted he was an intergalactic bounty hunter but I'm not entirely sure if I believe him, either way Paul was certainly a gentleman Smile

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Finally some action!!!! The General had been promising me some 'women' but I was beginning to think he was full of shit to be honest. Then he delivered!!!! He and Marco introduced me to a lovely lady called Femmi although they kept calling her Oola for some reason?? Marco insisted that she wanted a piece of him... but in all fairness, she seemed pretty interested in the General Wink
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Femmi also had a friend.... who wasn't to fussed about wearing loads of clothes!!!

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

I also met a couple of local girls along with another lone traveller Tiggy Smile The chance meeting was memorable to say the least What a Face

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

After the show, I was quickly packed up in a box. The General informed me that he had a friend in a place called New Jersey who was possibly able to help with my quest for home.
England turned out to be better than I imagined but I would be in no real hurry to return!!!

Dear Diary,

Anaheim was a blast and although I was no clearer to finding my way home, I met some interesting people and had a great time, I can't wait to see where I'm going next! Smile Jay has kept it quite secret???

Dear Diary

Everything just took a turn for the worse, I feel like I have left a glorious paradise dream and entered a horrible nightmare! I'm back in England and in North Yorkshire and back with the General!!!!! He has promised me a good time but I doubt he will deliver and I doubt it will get me any nearer to home..... BUT I'll give him the benefit of the doubt!

Today he brought me to an underground bunker owned buy his friend he let me out for a while to nosey around but he was rather drunk and talking nerd stuff to his friends...... There where also women present who failed to understand the value of collectables and before I knew it I was trapped in a bizarre world of dancing AT-AT's and gay bootlegs!

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

He also had a very bizarre friend who liked sniffing figures???? A reasonably unbearable experience but an experience all the same!

This is not the first time I have met this strange man! I had the errrr.... pleasure last time I was here where me an Tiggy had the 'experience' Sad

Hopefully the next few days will be more fruitful, The General has promised me a special trip???

THE TANTIVE TRAVELER - The Adventures Of A Roaming Rebel Empty Re: THE TANTIVE TRAVELER - The Adventures Of A Roaming Rebel

Post by General Kahn Tue Jun 09, 2015 10:36 pm

Dear Diary

Today the General took me to the City of York the original and true capital of England... so he claimed. I have to say the city is certainly interesting and very medieval and riddled with English history, The first place he took me was to the heart of York, York Minster, this is a huge Cathedral, one of the largest of it's kind in Europe. The structure is impressive to say the least! The General informed me that a church of some kind has existed on this site since the year 627 and due to Englands violent history, many burnings and general destruction lead to numerous rebuilds and repairs. The actual existing structure that is there today began construction in the 13 century.
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

The General informed City of York has been surrounded by a defensive wall since 71 AD and like the Cathedral this too had under gone many transformations and rebuilds. Although the city has long since spilled out around the wall, there is still an inner circle wall with several gates and portcullis. Much of the existing wall was built in the 12th and 13th century and the entirety of which can be walked.
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

The next stop was a small street in the city center known as The Shambles. The General informed me that this was a very historically old street and a fine example of old Medieval house building, where up and out was the best use of space, many of the old wood frame building on this street have been here since the 14th century!

As darkness fell the General took me to a gig to see a comedian called Reginald D. Hunter Smile

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

After the show the General took me to his favourite York pub down by the side of the River Ouse called the Kings Arms. This pub is what the Northerners call a Samual Smiths pub, which is basically cheap good local beer! You can still buy 3 pints for a fiver! The pub, like many buildings on the banks of the Ouse has a long history with flooding when the river breaks it's banks, the water that night was actually very high and had breeched the footways leading up to the pub! The picture doesn't really show it, but the water level behind the General is level with the path, it's normally about 10 ft below this level!

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

The next day, the General took me back into the city to see a couple more sites. One of these was what it known as Clifford's Tower a stone Keep of the York Castle which no longer exists. Like many old structures in York the building on this site has changed over the years but the current structure dates back to the 14 century. in 1190 the original wooden keep was burned to the ground in an act of collective suicide by 150 Jews. They had sought protection in the keep from a mob organized by a man called Richard Malebisse. On the night of March 16th 1190, rather than renounce there faith to the mob they set fire to the Keep several died in the fire but the rest killed each other Smile
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

After this the General cut the site seeing short and took me back to the Kings Head pub! It was nice to see it in the daytime though. The wooden frames are completely stuffed with coins in the cracks where ever you look.

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
For the second time in as many hours, the General was soon intoxicated and did something rather brash! On the way back to the hotel while visiting a gift shop on the city walls, he stole a piece of York gold!!!!!

During this act of thievery the General and I where caught and I was shackled, but before they managed to shackle the General he initiated an extravagant escape successfully freeing the both of us..... one problem though, he didn't acquire the key, so I am now forever shackled until the York Gold is returned Sad

THE TANTIVE TRAVELER - The Adventures Of A Roaming Rebel Empty Re: THE TANTIVE TRAVELER - The Adventures Of A Roaming Rebel

Post by General Kahn Thu Sep 17, 2015 9:45 pm

Dear Diary,

The General has done little to nothing over the last couple of months, his decent into alcoholism has been interesting to watch but destructive all the same. He can be such a shameful creature when he's drunk. He did take me on a brief visit to the town of Whitby recently and showed me a handful of interesting places, but due him actually been at work, the visit was small at best.
Whitby is a small town north of Scarborough that has existed as a fishing settlement for a long time, the first stop was the harbou
r.

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Another interesting site at Whitby is the Whale Bone Arch, in the mid 1850's Whitby was a whaling port and the bone arch was erected sometime in the mid 1850's. The bones where replaced in 1963 by bones donated from Norway. The current bones where erected in 2003 from bones donated by Alaska.

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

It appears that the town of Whitby is probably most famous for it's connection with a famous piece of literature by a man called Bram Stoker. It turns out that a book called Dracula which is based on a mythical beast called a vampire made a brief reference to Whitby. After travelling by ship from Transylvania, Count Dracula is grounded at Whitby after he has drank the blood of the entire crew. Despite only a brief mention in the book, Whitby has played on this heavily and has become a hub for vampire wanna be's and Goth's and now host an annual Goth festival. Bram Stoker himself did actually visit Whitby and the view from the northern cliff is what inspired it's inclusion into his book.
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

The General informed me that the most historically important site at Whitby is the infamous Abbey. This is the ruined remnants of an old monastery on the Southern cliff of the town. The site was first used as a monastery in 657AD by the Anglo Saxons. It was ultimately destroyed by the Danes (Possibly descendants of Marco cheeky  ) in the late 860's AD and was left unused for at least 2 hundred years. Ultimately rebuilt the building that is the present ruin existed until 1540 at which point it was partially destroyed as part of Henry the VIII's Dissolution of the Monasteries at which point it fell into ruin and has existed in this state ever since. The Abbey suffered it's final blow on the morning of December 16th 1914.
The East coast of England was engulfed in a thick fog bank that morning. Just after 8am two German battlecruisers, the Von der Tann and Derfflinger emerged from the fog bank at Scarborough and began shelling the town, they then moved North and shelled Whitby and ultimately Hartlepool. While at Whitby, while aiming at a signal post on the head land, they also shelled the abbey and caused considerable damage.
The bombardment its self, although historically destructive to Scarborough, Whitby and Hartlepool was used as a huge campaign to encourage people to enlist in the army. 137 people where killed in the raids, most civilians, the first act of civilian atrocity of the war. Apparently this was used to promote military service with the some now infamous posters entitled "Remember Scarborough"

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

On our return to Scarborough, the General briefly stopped at a reasonably uninteresting wall in Scarborough... however, apparently, it's been here a while!

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Finally...... he gave me a treat Very Happy
