Amazing Mold Rubber

Has anyone tried to use this "Amazing Mold Rubber" by "Alumilite" to create mold of vintage body parts?  [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

I'm going to try it out, and see if I can cast a few torso's, for some custom figures.

If this works, it will cut down on the number of beaters that I need to use.

Hey that looks promising. Where did you buy that at, and have you tried it yet? My fiancee and I have been messing around with molding and casting lately, with mixed results. Our biggest set backs have been with air bubbles, which will ruin the part your casting and make it incomplete or too fragile. It looks like if you wanna make serious casts you need a set up with an air compressor and a chamber to put your molds and materials in.

If you have tried this out, and gotten positive results, please let me know!

I haven't had time to try it out yet. If you watch some vids on youtube, they say to pour the liquid from high up and let it flow over your pieces.

Yes please do. We have tried so many different methods to remove the air bubbles, a high pour included. If you find a method that works please share!

I forgot to mention that I got it here, at Michaels Canada, but it also seems to be available at Michaels & Hobby Lobby in the US.

Not sure where to get it in other countries.

Oh cool, thanks for the additional info! I have found some good recipes online for making your own molding compound, and it seems to work pretty well. There is no getting around buying good materials for the actual casting though. I plan on using both firm plastics to replicate star wars and other toys, but also a few different types of rubber, firm and more bendable. I also collect little figures like mattel muscles, monster in my pocket, fantasy and monster themed toy soldiers, and so much more. I plan on making custom originals in that field too.

Just gotta get all the equipment I need to make the stuff right!

Aright, I'm super exited at my first attempt.   An R4 droid heads that fits on a vintage R2-D2 or R5-D4 body.  I just took it from the mold.  Hopefully with a little practice, they will get better.

No need for expensive 3D printing

Sorry, the casting resin is white, and doesn't show up very well.  But it does have very nice details.   The casting resin cures in 10 - 15 minutes.

As you can see, once the molds are made, I can cast the parts every 15 minutes or so. I made 3 more droid heads in about an hour last night.

It's the molds that take the time to create. Plus, there is always a better way to remake the molds, once you have figured out the problems with your first attempt.

Wow! Those look great! So your not getting any air bubbles? Is this using the "high poor" method? Man, I'm not sure what we are doing wrong over here...maybe it has something to do with the "homemade" mold material recipes my fiancee has been using. I really think we just need to bite the bullet and order more professional stuff. Can't wait to see how those body parts come out you have pictured. Such a great solution for customizing!

Chris, the first piece I cast had a bubble or two, but nothing major. The rest worked better and I haven't found any bubbles on them.

The major problem I'm having at the moment is, finding a mold release agent. I want to make 2 pc. molds. The one I bought, doesn't work with the Rubber mold compound and the two haves of the mold are bonding together. Then I have to cut them apart, but not in the place I want too. I read on the almighty internet, that cooking spray might work. But the olive oil cooking spray we have didn't work. Now I will try the other alternative that I've read about. Good old vaseline. This stuff is fairly expensive, so I don't want to make too many more mistakes.

James, once I've perfected a piece or two, I'll try and make a tutorial.

You should know that you can't just bring up Vaseline around here and not draw my attention

This could definitely be the future of custom SW figures. It will work out far more affordable in the long run, casting multiple copies from just one original figure part.

My only concern with showing a step by step process, would be that some dishonest people would start casting a blue snag or Yak face, even some of the other last 17 characters, seeing as they are becoming so expensive.
but I guess that is already happening anyway

We would then get more & more figures as repo's, not just Yak Face, Blue Snags, Stormtroopers, Vlix, etc...

I'll document the process with lots of pictures, then maybe it will be a pdf file that gets emailed to trusted customizers.

Good luck Jim. I'm getting mixed results at the moment. I just have to adjust how I pour the resin into certain molds. It's a lot of trial and error.

I can see it really being worth while if you have to make a lot of the same pieces, like the R4 droid heads, or you have a hard time finding certain figures to use, like Han Bespin, that gets used in so many customs.
