The Man Behind The Mask : a local Enid , Oklahoma Artist's cool creations
So yesterday a super cool guy named Matthew (aka StarWarsGeek1977) gave me this kickass custom figure made of masking tape (13 1/2 inches tall !)

I really can't say Thank You enough to Matt for having this custom made for me and any of you guys who know me and my odd taste very well will know that I am absolutely thrilled with it
The Man Behind The Mask is a local Enid artist named Mike Sutherland who makes figures out of masking tape and then paints them . I had seen some of his work in our newspaper a few years ago but had never seen his work in person until a couple weeks ago when I visited Matt at home and he showed me a couple that he owns ( They are really freaking cool !!! )

Hey, I'm super happy that James [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] likes Jason....James was really cool to me, and gave me some stuff I had been looking for..The day James came to my house and seen my tape guys, I knew he would love a " Jason." Right after James left I called Mike and asked him to make one for me.... It turned out awesome....Mike is a super-talented artist, and a great guy... I have a few pieces that he made for me....I have a tape guy of "me", Stormtrooper, and Doc Holiday from "Tombstone... I will take some pics of them tomorrow and post them... Have a great night guys...

What an awesome custom and an even better gesture! I'm feeling all warm and sticky inside....
Nice work fellas.
Nice work fellas.
Here are my Tape guys that Mike Sutherland made....
Hey [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] ...Here are 3 of my tape guys that Mike made........Little "me" is my favorite.......Mike started making tape guys about 2.5 years ago.. I had talked to him a couple of times, and he had said that he could make just about anyone or anything....He had only made a handful, and had never made a non- famous person... I jokingly asked him if he could make me... He said " send me a pic of you." I had my wife take a pic of me...Besides being a lifelong Star Wars fan, I'm a huge Oklahoma Sooners fan, and a big fan of Pepsi... I was wearing an OU shirt and hat in the pic... Mike added the Pepsi can in my hand....I was the first non- celebrity he made.... It's still my favorite... I refer to him as "little me." He made the Stormtrooper to raffle off at Christmas time 2 years ago...I bid against myself and took him home.....I also love the Val Kilmer " Doc Holiday" character in Tombstone... I asked him to make him for me... he did...I'm your Huckleberry......Here are the 3 figures...
Little me.. complete with Pepsi...

Thank you for posting pics of your awesome figures Matt
Here's another plot twist to this story ...
Yesterday I was racking my brain trying to figure out why the name Mike Sutherland seemed so familiar to me and it finally hit me . When I was a senior in High School about 30 years ago I got my first job at a restaurant called Sonic . My bosses name was Duane Sutherland and he had 3 kids at that time - one of which I finally remembered was named Mikey
I pm'ed Matt yesterday to see if he knew what Mike's Dad's name was and sure enough it was Duane
Now I seriously doubt Mike remembers me from his childhood but the point is I knew him when he was only 6 years old or so when I was 17
Duane was more then a boss to me as well - we were good friends and partied together frequently . I also played many a game of chess with Duane - although he beat me 90 % of the time I think he liked playing me because I was one of very few people that at least gave him a challenge .
Now granite , Enid is a small town but with a population of over 50,000 people , it is still a pretty big coincidence that I would know the artist in such a round about way
