I did have a better look at the dome in question & mine looks the same underneath, with the same white spots showing thru. I then nicked the neck stem with a knife and it's definitely made of white plastic underneath the chrome. So maybe they just came up with a more durable chroming process?
I also checked thru the rest of the beaters heads that I have. There might be a couple of sensorscope heads with the same chroming process. Let me throw them in the solution and I'll let you know.
Interesting - I will check the one you sent me closer and I believe I'll try soaking it in the "solution" again as well to see if the chrome finish will come off
One suggestion on the domes you found that look like they may be the same - if you soak them individually it may be easier to keep track of the chrome on that particular dome and if it comes off when soaked

Re: Unpainted Droids ... Are they Prototypes ???
Opps, I already threw them all in.
edit - I pulled them all out of the solution. They were only in for a few minutes. The couple of candidates are the bottom of the picture. I'll soak them one at a time.
Just so everyone sees the condition that these are in, before I strip them completely. They are not off of a complete droid. They are strictly loose beater parts that I've compiled over the years.

Sorry James, no luck in finding another dome with that special chrome finish. But on the brightside, I have some nice coloured domes. I'll take some pictures and send you the ones that you don't have.

Re: Unpainted Droids ... Are they Prototypes ???
wow i skipped this thread but after seeing yet another prototype find on ebay and rolling my eyes as i knew it was stripped i checked this thread out.
great article very informative
i never knew they were made from different coloured plastic on occasions. it makes sense the consumer will not know once there painted
if i ever come across a nasty beater loose limbed scratched up dsd im gonna strip him. it will be like a scratch card and i hopefully il win by finding a coloured limb ha ha

This is a fantastic thread, really informative with some outstanding pics! I love all the swirly plastic heads and different coloured limbs. Hopefully as a direct result of the info in this thread, other collectors will be far less likely to get fooled into buying a stripped droid, that was advertised as something it is not.

I cleaned them up for future customs & for our article. The more that the odd colours can be documented and the word gets spread, the less likely that they can be sold off as "prototypes".

They are the same cream colour plastic as the 3 3/4" figures.

Re: Unpainted Droids ... Are they Prototypes ???
Have you ever seen any convincing jobs at reproduction vac metalized domes? I guess they would need the right blue paint to pull it off.
Then again you could make some interesting customs that way to be sure.
I'm guessing the cost just doesn't make sense given the going rate of a fresh looking loose R2.

I don't think a painted one would be convincing to a collector. There are lots of good R2's out there yet. Better making something that Kenner never made.

Re: Unpainted Droids ... Are they Prototypes ???
I hear you but a fully vac metalized R2 or maybe a Han carbonite block (potf2 of course) would be pretty rad.
So you've never seen anything that looked like a second gen diy/repro vac metalization, trying to pass as genuine?

No worries. I'm glad you brought another example to the thread. Keep them coming.
I'll add the description to your previous post when the auction ends.
Plus now we have pictures, when the ebay link goes dead.

I've updated the RL-C3PO post that Chris started. The final selling price was almost $67 CND.
